TEHRAN (IQNA) – The first edition of a Quran competition for children and teenagers from five African countries has concluded.

The African Studies Center affiliated to the Ideological and Cultural Affairs Department of the Astan (custodianship) of Hazrat Abbas (AS) holy shrine organized the Quranic event.

Contenders from Tanzania, Mali, Niger, Senegal, and Mauritania competed on memorization of short Surahs of the Quran.

A total of 150 boys and girls aged 6 to 15 took part in the Quran competition, which was supervised by a panel of Quran experts, according to Sheikh Saad al-Shimri, the head of the center.

He told Al-Kafeel website that the contest was aimed at encouraging children and teenagers to memorize the Quran.

Winner were awarded cash and other prizes at the closing ceremony and all the contenders received certificates of attendance, he noted.

Al-Shimri expressed hope that such programs will also be organized for other age groups from Africa.

The African Studies Center of the Astan organizes various Quranic, religious, ideological and cultural programs for African countries.
