IQNA – The authorities in the Indian-administered Kashmir did not allow congregational Friday prayers at the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar for the tenth consecutive week.

It comes as the chief imam, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq remains under house arrest, the managing body of the mosque said on Friday.

“Authorities once again disallowed Friday prayers at the central Jamia Masjid Srinagar today for the 10th consecutive week in a row and also put (Mirwaiz Umar Farooq) who delivers the Friday sermon at Jamia Masjid under house detention,” Anjuman Auqaf, the managing body of the Jamia Masjid, said in a statement.

It said no reason was provided by authorities for these restrictions and curbs.

Since October 13, Friday prayers have not been allowed at the mosque as the authorities believe there could be pro-Palestine and anti-Israel protests.

Condemning the continuation of his house arrest, Mirwaiz said all claims of so-called normalcy by officials fall flat by such anti-people measures.

“I fail to understand why the central Jama Masjid was being targeted again and again unless it is to cause grief to Muslims of the valley and show them their place in ‘naya Kahshmir’,” he said.

He added that authorities should stop playing with the religious sentiments of the Muslims and let them offer prayers in their mosques without any hindrance.

“People’s silence and endurance of brazen attacks on their religious rights should not be mistaken as their weakness to respond,” he said.
