TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iranian cultural centers in other countries will hold special programs online to mark the 31st anniversary of Imam Khomeini’s (RA) demise, an official said.

Abuzar Ebrahimi Torkaman, head of the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization, said that the programs include webinars and forums, book reading contests, photo exhibitions and TV programs.

They will be organized online due to the coronavirus outbreak, he noted.

A speech by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei that will be delivered on Wednesday, the anniversary of the late founder of the Islamic Republic’s demise, will also be broadcast with translations in different languages, he added.

Every year, the anniversary of Imam Khomeini’s demise is marked with a ceremony at his mausoleum with Leader of the Islamic Revolution and other Iranian officials in attendance.

Also, large crowds of Iranians travel to Tehran from different parts of the country to take part in the ceremony and pay tribute to Imam Khomeini at his shrine.

But this year these events have been called off due to the restrictions imposed to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

Ayatollah Ruhollah Mousavi Khomeini, better known as Imam Khomeini, engineered Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, which led to the overthrow of the US-backed Shah of Iran.

Imam Khomeini passed away on June 3, 1989, at the age of 87.
