TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Tehran branch of the Iranian Immigration and Passport Police Department has extended its working hours to facilitate issuing passports for those who wish to take part in the Arbaeen pilgrimage in Iraq.

Tehran Police Chief Hossein Rahimi made the announcement on Sunday, adding that the offices of the department are ready to issues visas from 8 am to 5 pm every workday.

Meanwhile, four Iraqi consulates as well as 20 makeshift offices affiliated to Iraqi embassy in Iran have started issuing visas for Iranian pilgrims.

Arbaeen comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias, including Iranians, flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

In the past few years, around 20 million pilgrims from all over the world took part in the mourning ceremonies in the Iraqi holy city marking Arbaeen.

This year, Arbaeen falls on Tuesday, October 30.
