Iran Raps Terrorist Attack in Spain

Bahram Qassemi, the ministry’s spokesman, expressed sympathy with the Spanish government and nation and the families of the victims of the "heinous crime”.

He described terrorism as a global problem, regretting that the "blind Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorism” has crossed all geographical and ideological boundaries and targeted people all over the world from the Middle East to Africa to Far East and Europe.

Qassemi stressed that it is time that all peace-loving countries and those who have genuinely put fighting terrorism high on their agenda formed a global union against violence, terrorism and insecurity.

The Islamic Republic of Iran, as one of the victims of terrorism and a country that has always been at the forefront of fighting extremism and terror is ready to cooperate with the world community in this fight, he went on to say.

A van crashed into dozens of people in the center of the Spanish city of Barcelona on Thursday, killing over a dozen people, including foreign nationals, and injuring many others.

The city police described the incident on Twitter as a "massive crash,” saying, "Huge collision on Las Ramblas in Barcelona by an individual driving a van, many injuries.”

A Catalan government official said that there were 13 dead and around 100 injured in the attack, which was claimed by the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group.

A second attack occurred in Spain's northeastern Catalan region, hours after the first one.

In the early hours of Friday morning, five armed attackers knocked down "several” people with a car before being killed in a shootout with police in the small coastal town of Cambrils, 120 kilometers (75 miles) south of Barcelona.

Officials have so far provided few details on the Cambrils attack, other than confirming that six bystanders were injured, two seriously, along with one police officer.
